Longevity Cakes In Singapore: What Shou Tao Means And What To Order
A longevity cake is the cake given at an elder’s birthday, built around the shou tao (寿桃) — the longevity peach. The symbol comes from the Chinese legend of the peaches of immortality, which ripen only once every few thousand years and grant long life to whoever eats them, so giving one is a wish for many more years.
If you are ordering for a parent’s or grandparent’s birthday and want to get the form right, here is what the tradition asks for and what we make.
What the longevity peach is
In its oldest form it is not a cake at all. It is a steamed lotus seed bun, white, with a red-dyed tip and a crease down one side so it reads as a peach, sometimes with a green leaf added. Inside is usually lotus or red bean paste. Bakeries still make them in stacked towers for big birthdays.
The modern longevity cake keeps the symbol and changes the format — a celebration cake decorated with peaches, or shaped as one, so there is something to cut and share at the table.
When a longevity cake is given
It belongs to the birthdays of older family members, where the occasion is the reaching of age itself rather than the number. Beyond that, families differ, and there is no single rule about which birthdays qualify. If your family has a convention, follow it; if it does not, an elder’s milestone birthday is always a safe occasion.
What we make
We hold one of the larger longevity cake ranges in Singapore, and it is the category our customers return to most for elders’ birthdays.
Shou Tao Cherry Blossom Cake: the classic, softened
Peaches set among cherry blossom work, for families who want the traditional symbol without a traditional-looking cake. See the design.
Shou Longevity Character Cake: the 寿 character
Built around the shou character itself, the most direct expression of the wish. See the design.
Dragon Longevity Cake: for the big birthdays
The one to order when the celebration is large and the cake needs presence on the table. See the design.

Pairs longevity symbolism with fortune motifs, which suits birthdays that double as family gatherings. See the design.
Blossoms Of Longevity Cake: the gentler reading
Floral-led, lighter in feel, and a good choice where the guest of honour would find a dragon too much. See the design.

Longevity noodles rendered in cake form — a favourite with families who serve the noodles at the same meal. See the design.
